JEE Main 2018: Top IIITs and Their Cutoffs

CBSE will announce the JEE Main Result 2018 on the 30th April 2018. Result for JEE Main paper II will be announced on 31st May 2018 separately. Candidates will be able to check their JEE Main result online which will have details of section-wise marks allotted, All India Rank/category-wise rank and the cutoff score for JEE Advanced 2018. Top 2, 24,000 candidates of JEE Main 2018 will qualify for appearing in JEE Advanced 2018 which will screen the students for admission to the IIT’s. Admission to the IIIT’s will be as per the cut off list prepared on the basis of marks obtained in the JEE Main 2018.

IIITs of the country hold the status of Institutes of National Importance. There are total 23 IIIT’s in the country which take admissions through JEE Main exam. The cutoff list for top IIIT’s would have a category-wise opening and closing rank for the particular IIIT. The cut off for top IIIT’s is dependent on various factors such as:
  • The total number of applicants appeared for JEE Main 2018.
  • Level of difficulty of the engineering entrance tests.
  • The total number of questions asked in JEE Main exam.
  • Previous year’s cut off trends.
  • Performance of the candidates in JEE Main.
Even if a candidate has scored more than JEE Main Cutoff, it may so happen that he/she may not meet JEE Main cutoff for top IIITs. Every IIIT has their own cutoff on the basis of which they give admission to students in various branches of engineering. In fact, the cutoff for computer science engineering may also vary from the cutoff for IT engineering. Candidates who have appeared for JEE Main 2018 will have to wait for their exam score, as well as their All India Rank that is calculated on the basis of JEE Main score. Even though all the IIIT’s maintain equal standards of technical learning, there are few parameters because of which ranking is given to them. The ranking parameters are:

Age- IIIT’s which are older are ranked higher because with age they have grown in Institute infrastructure, accreditation and facilities.

Faculty- Quality of faculty, their strength and researches are done by faculty is important for an IIIT to hold good ranking.

Infrastructure- Academic buildings and proper classrooms, library, hostel, canteen and playgrounds, lab equipment hold importance while ranking the IIIT’s.

Placement- Placement statistics such as the highest package, lowest package and number of recruiters visiting the campus cannot be ignored while ranking an IIIT.

Research work- Publications coming from the institute, PhD scholars in the institute, frequency of workshop, seminar and conferences organized by the institute hold importance in the ranking of IIIT’s.

Location- Location plays an important role in ranking as better location creates better opportunities at the time of study and even at the time of placements.
JEE Main cutoff for top IIITs 2018 will be released once the counselling process is completed. As mentioned above previous year cut off trends would also determine the cut off for IIIT’s in the academic year 2018-19, therefore, students can be well prepared if they know the cutoffs for the previous year 2017.Let us have a look at the JEE Main cut offs of top IIIT’s for the year 2017:

Changes made in deriving cut-off marks
As per the changes brought in 2017 by CBSE in calculating JEE main cut-off score and rank of the candidates, no weight will be given to the marks of class 12th while calculating JEE Main rank. The admission to IIIT’s will be based on the rank obtained by the candidate in JEE main exam only. Nevertheless, the candidate must have scored at least 75% in their 12th standard (65% for reserved category candidates) or must be in top 20 percentile in their respective boards.

Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JOSAA) will be conducting the counselling for admission into IIIT’s. This counselling will be conducted in 6 rounds tentatively. Counselling and allotment of seats will be done for all the 23 IIITs together. The process of joint counselling and seat allotment will be held online, while registration (option entry), will take place from the first week of July 2018. Candidates who qualify the IIIT cut off shall be taking part in the IIIT counselling.
